A city council committee voted against freezing their own salaries this year, an idea proposed Monday as a sign of support for struggling Londoners during the pandemic.

The increase is equivalent to about a dollar a day, and the council’s general service committee has rejected an offer to abandon the inflationary increase.

“It is a gesture for the people of our community who have suffered because of the pandemic. Our economy has suffered. People have lost their jobs. Businesses have closed. This is why we presented this today ”, Ward 5 Coun. Maureen Cassidy, who chairs the committee, said Monday.

“This is not something that is unprecedented,” she added, highlighting the 2020 board’s decision to decline a pay rise.

Last year’s decision was unanimous.

Advisors currently earn $ 52,358, and if approved later this month, the increase will increase their salary to $ 52,725. The mayor earns $ 141,200 and his new salary would be $ 142,188.

Mayor Ed Holder, Deputy Mayor Josh Morgan and Councilors Elizabeth Peloza and Michael van Holst voted against the proposed freeze in a joint motion by Cassidy, Jesse Helmer and Arielle Kayabaga.

Cassidy and Kayabaga voted in favor of the freeze.

“My concerns stem from the fact that we are forgoing the incremental increases recommended by a fair third-party working group and potentially opting for a larger one (in the future),” Peloza said.

The last term, the board chose to tie its compensation to the median full-time income in London.

An external task force proposed the formula, which includes annual increases based on the labor index or the consumer price index, whichever is lower. For 2020, that’s an increase of 0.7%.

The works services committee voted unanimously on Monday to bring back the same task force to review councilor compensation for the next term and update the recommendation with a more recent median full-time income in London. It is currently based on 2015 figures.

Morgan said advisors’ compensation should reflect the role and the work required.

“Really, fair compensation is linked to what the job is, what the responsibilities are. This is how we evaluate all the jobs in the (city) company, ”he said.

The full board will have the final say on councilor compensation when it votes later this month.
